Touraine Chicken

The Touraine is an old breed of Chickens native to the Touraine province in France. In the 19th century, Asian chicken breeds like the Croad Langshan appeared and hence the genetic heritage of the Touraine chicken breed got changed dramatically. As a result, the bird’s production of eggs and meat increased, and a standard was established to protect this breed from being absorbed in the new imported and more productive breeds.

The Touraine has a beautiful shiny black plumage with a moderate-sized single comb and wattles. It has red earlobes with amount of whites which sometimes becomes dominant, and slate-blue legs. The Touraine is also a rustic and lively dual-purpose chicken, that produces very fine white meat.

Touraine hens are good layers of dark-creamy eggs (around 170 eggs per year of weight 70 g per each). They occasionally go broody, and when they do they make wonderful mothers. The Touraine chickens prefer free-range rearing than confinement, and they are tamable and friendly birds indeed.
