Tôtenkô Chicken

The Tôtenkô is a very rare long-tailed Chicken breed from Japan. The bird is a long crower too, and its crow may last for around 20 seconds in a high-pitched tone. The Tôtenkô is a graceful and beautiful bird indeed, however Japanese breeders focus has been first and foremost on the long-crowing trait and beauty comes second.

The Tôtenkô has remarkably long saddle and tail feathers, that give the roosters a glamorous appearance. This bird’s body confirmation somehow resembles that of the Shoukoku. The main differences are the plumage, the colors of the earlobes and shanks. Shoukokus have red earlobes, bright-yellow legs and comes in the white and silver-duckwing color-varieties. While Tôtenkôs have white earlobes, olive-green legs, and comes only in the black-breasted red color-variety.

Tôtenkôs are very similar to the Phoenix chickens of Germany too, but the later species is different in having slate-blue legs, and a closed tail instead. The hens of this breed are fair layers of white eggs, and lay approximately 120 eggs per year. Perhaps, Tôtenkô hens go broody or at least occasionally do, as they don’t lay many eggs.
