Swedish Flower Chicken
The Swedish Flower is a very rare breed of Chickens, that emerged as a landrace several hundred years ago, in southern Sweden. This chicken breed was close to extinction in the 1970s, however a few enthusiasts found an adequate number of survivors. Then a breeding program was established to increase the Swedish Flower’s population.
Swedish Flower chickens are the largest, and probably the most beautiful native breed of chickens in Sweden. The breed’s name was derived from the mottling of the feather tips, resembling a field of blooming flowers. In fact, the flowers in the surrounding environment make them look as if they’re covered in petals. And most interestingly, almost no two Swedish Flower chickens are alike, which makes them all unique. The base coloring of this chicken breed varies from black, yellow, red or blue, and some birds have head crests. The Swedish Flower chicken has a single comb, red earlobes that may be mixed with white or fully white in some birds, and mostly bright-yellow legs.
The Swedish Flower is a very robust chicken, that copes well with cold winters, and well-suited to free-range environments. The hens lay up to 200 creamy-white eggs per year, of weight 60 g per each. Swedish Flowers are an early-maturing chickens, that are quite disease resistant too.
