Swedish Black Chicken

The Swedish Black, or the Svarthöna, is a traditional and historic breed of Chickens from Sweden. It has completely black skin and feathers, and even its internal organs, flesh and bones are black too.

Swedish Blacks are thought to have inherited the black color of their skin and internal connective tissues from Asian chickens, that were first brought to Norway and the surrounding areas in the 1800s. Also, genetic evidences indicate that these birds were derived from the Indonesian Ayam Cemani, which they closely resemble.

Swedish Blacks are a landrace chicken breed, that usually have black medium-sized single combs and wattles (some offspring have red hues in their combs and wattles). They are tough and cold-hardy birds indeed, which are known to be great foragers too. The Swedish Black is also a very calm and affectionate bird with a slender body and a beautiful showy look.

Swedish Black hens are fair layers of creamy-white eggs with large yolks. They lay around 140 eggs per year of weight 45 – 50 g per each. The Swedish Black is an extremely rare chicken breed, that is rarely seen outside its country of origin.
