Sussex Chicken

The Sussex is a large breed of Chickens, that originated in the county of Sussex, England, and hence comes the name. It’s a dual-purpose bird that was highly prized in its country of origin more than 100 years ago. In fact, the Sussex is a good table fowl indeed, and among the most productive breeds of chickens as well.

Sussex hens are prolific layers of large tan to light-brown eggs (around 240 – 260 eggs per year). They occasionally go broody, especially in the warmer months of the year. In the meantime, the Sussex is a very popular chicken breed used in poultry shows, in addition to being used as a dual-purpose backyard fowl.

The Sussex has made a huge contribution to the poultry industry and is even an ancestor to the modern Broiler chickens. It’s an alert, docile and good forager chicken, that can adapt well to any surrounding. The Sussex has close fitted feathers, a single comb, red earlobes, and whitish-yellow legs.

The Sussex chicken comes in many color-varieties that include; brown, buff, light, columbian, white and speckled, which is the most attractive color-variety. A bantam version is also available for this fabulous breed.
