Slaty-Breasted Tinamou

The Slaty-Breasted Tinamou or the Boucard’s Tinamou is a type of  Tinamou commonly found in lowland moist forests of Mexico and Central America. This species is represented by two subspecies, which inhabit different places of the bird’s distribution range.

The Slaty-Breasted tinamou has slate-grey head, neck, mantle and breast as the name indicates. Its back is of a deep chestnut color, often with very obscure scaling or barring. The Slaty-Breasted tinamou has also brown wings, white throat, and pinkish legs.

Slaty-Breasted tinamous don’t build a nest, and eggs are commonly laid on the ground, on a mat of leaves, usually between the buttresses of a tree. The clutch contains up to 9 eggs which are laid by several females. Only the male Slaty-Breasted tinamou does the incubation which lasts for around 16 days. The male also does all the parental care till the hatchlings become independent after around 3 weeks.
