Russain Orloff Chicken

The Russain Orloff is a rare Chicken breed that originally came from the Gilan province in northern Iran. Some of them were taken to Moscow and renamed by Count Orloff Techesmensky. From Russia, they became known to Europe and hence the name came.

The Orloff is a tall and strong chicken breed, with a somewhat gamey-like appearance, and bright-yellow legs. The neck is well feathered, and the head is enhanced with full muffs and a beard. Orloffs’ plumage, combined with their tiny walnut comb, make them a very cold hardy chicken breed. They are primarily suited to meat production, although they are slow growers. Orloff Hens are relatively poor layers of light brown eggs (around 100 eggs per year), but they don’t usually go broody.

The Russain Orloff is recognized in several color-varieties which include; black, white, black-tailed red, mahogany, cuckoo, and spangled which is the most common and well-known one. A bantam version is also available for this breed.
