Posavina Crested Chicken
The Posavina Crested (Posavska Kukmica) is a breed of Chickens, which got developed along the Sava river in the Posavina region in Croatia. It is classified as a heavy chicken breed, and is thought to be closely related to the Austrian Altsteirer. Although, Pasovina Crested chickens were in their country of origin for a long time, they only got standardized few years ago.
The Posavina is a sturdy dual-purpose chicken, which is raised for meat and eggs production. They have single combs, moderate-sized wattles, red earlobes, and bright-yellow legs. Upon their heads, there is a relatively full, global, and beautiful crest, that covers the bird’s eyes, which is more profuse and round in female birds.
Posavina hens are good layers of light-brown eggs (around 160 eggs per year of weight 60 g per each). They tend to go broody too, and when they do they become great mothers indeed.
Posavina Crested chickens are known with their gentle personalities, and come in several color-varieties too. The most common color-varieties are; partridge, silver-penciled, white, buff and black-mottled. Posavina chickens also have excellent foraging abilities, that help them to get a lot of their diet by themselves.
