Pavlov Chicken

The Pavlov is an old Russian Chicken breed, which got named after the village of Pavlovo in the province of Nizhniy Novgorod, in Russia. The breed dates back to the 17th century and is thought to have been developed from crested chickens that were kept in queen Catherine II’s poultry yard.

The Pavlov is a small-sized fowl with a horizontal body, very high tail, full beard and muffs, and feathered feet and legs. Pavlovs have also V-shaped combs covered by their crests, very small wattles, and red earlobes which are covered by their large beards.

Pavlov hens are fair layers of white or creamy-white eggs (around 170 eggs per year, that weighs 50 g per each). They also tend to go broody and make wonderful mothers. Pavlov chickens are well-known for their tasteful eggs and meat.

Pavlovs are very beautiful chickens indeed, which are raised mainly for ornamental purposes. Generally, they are friendly birds too, that don’t mind socializing. The most common color-verities for the Pavlovs are the white, the deep golden-brown and the silvery-white. In the last two color-varieties, much of the body feathers end with black tips, which contrast beautifully with the ground color. The Pavlov is a highly prized chicken breed in its land of origin, and in global poultry shows as well.
