Ostfriesische Möwe Chicken

The Ostfriesische Möwe (literally means ‘the East Frisian Gull’), is a breed of Chickens from Germany. In fact, the name Gull is said to have originated as the chicks‘ appearance is similar to that of Seagull chicks.

The Ostfriesische Möwe is a landrace that evolved as an excellent free-range chicken quite known for its egg laying abilities. It’s closely related to the Westfälische Totleger and the Braekel chicken breeds, which are similar in appearance. Ostfriesische Möwe chickens always have single combs, white earlobes, and slate-blue legs.

The Ostfriesische Möwe hen is a good layer of white eggs (around 180 eggs per year of weight 55 g per each), but she rarely goes broody. These birds come in two color-varieties; black-speckled silver and black-speckled gold. Möwe roosters have fairly long hackle and saddle feathers that cover their body speckles. A bantam version is also available for this magnificent and rare chicken breed.
