Norwegian Jærhøns Chicken
The Norwegian Jærhøns is the only indigenous Chicken breed in Norway, that got developed in the 1920’s. It’s an auto-sexing chicken breed, meaning that male and female chicks hatch in different colors. Jærhøns cockerels will hatch with more white on their heads.
The Jærhøns chicken is a very sleek and slender bird, with a reasonably large single comb, and moderate-sized wattles. These birds also have white earlobes, and bright-yellow legs. Two color-varieties are recognized for the Jærhøns; the dark-brown and yellow color-variety, and the light-brown and yellow color-variety.
Jærhøns hens are excellent layers of white eggs (around 215 eggs per year of weight 55 g or more per each). They rarely go broody, but when they do, they make excellent mothers. In general, the Jærhøns is a very active chicken breed, that matures early and prefers free-range rearing. A bantam version is also available for this breed.
