Niederrheiner Chicken
The Niederrheiner is an exceedingly rare Chicken breed, that originated in Germany. It’s a hardy dual-purpose chicken breed, used to produce meat and plenty of eggs. The Niederrheiner was developed in the first half of the 20th century, by crossbreeding many large chicken breeds which include; the Orpington and the Plymouth Rock.
Niederrheiner hens lay large cream-colored eggs in high numbers (around 200 eggs per year of weight 55 g per each). But, they are classified as non-sitters. Despite being an auto-sexing breed, you can’t tell the gender of Niederrheiner chicks easily at 1-day old, and a study is still being conducted to come up with clear visual differences to tell them apart once they hatch.
Niederrheiner chickens have moderate-sized single combs and wattles, red earlobes and whitish-yellow legs. They come in a number of stunning color-varieties that include; crele, blue, cuckoo, and lemon cuckoo which is the most beautiful of them all. Niederrheiners are placid and docile chickens with friendly personalities, and make great table birds as well. A bantam version is also available for this magnificent breed.
