New Hampshire Red Chicken

     The New Hampshire Red is a heavy breed of Chickens, that originated in the state of New Hampshire in the USA. The bird was developed by applying selective breeding on Rhode Island Reds, intensifying the characteristics of early-maturing, rapid full feathering, and production of large brown eggs in high quantities.

     New Hampshire Red chickens are handsome birds indeed, with their rich chestnut-red plumage, of a color somewhat lighter and shadier than that of Rhode Island Reds. They have single combs, red wattles and earlobes, and bright yellow legs.

     The New Hampshire is a dual-purpose breed of chickens, for producing both meat and eggs. Hens of this breed lay plenty of large brown eggs (160 – 240 eggs per year). Hampshire hens occasionally go broody, and make attentive mothers when they do. A bantam version is also available for this chicken breed.
