Nankin Bantam

The Nankin Bantam is thought to be one of the oldest breeds of true Bantam Chickens. The bird is thought to have originated in the Chinese city of Nanking, and hence comes the name, but its exact origins are unknown. Nankin Bantams have contributed in developing other true bantam breeds such as; the Sebright. Unfortunately, these magnificent birds are listed as a critically endangered chicken breed, but great efforts are exerted to protect them from extinction.

Nankin Bantams are hardy and calm birds that are less flighty than other true bantam chicken breeds. Due to their small size and light frame, they are excellent flyers, so a run should have a roof if they will be kept confined. However, Nankins don’t tend to wander too far if allowed to free-range.

Nankin hens aren’t good layers, but they go broody quite easily, and make exceptional mothers. Several hens often taking it in turns to sit on the eggs. Once hatched, even the roosters will help with rearing the chicks, showing them where to find the best food locations. The Nankin Bantam comes only in the buff color-variety, with a single or a rose comb. It’s also characterized by its red earlobes and slate-blue legs.
