Nagoya Chicken

The Nagoya is a breed of Chickens from Japan, that was developed in the first quarter of the 20th century. This bird was the main Japanese dual-purpose chicken breed, until the introduction of more productive breeds like; the white Leghorn and Broiler chickens.

The Nagoya is a medium-sized chicken breed, with a lively nature, and a stunning appearance. These birds come only in a single color-variety; black-tailed buff with bright orange hackle and saddle feathers. The Nagoya has a single comb, red earlobes, and slate-blue legs. These chickens also have Cochin-like bodies, as the Cochin is one of the ancestors of this breed, and for that reason it’s called in Nagoya-Cochin in its country of origin.

Nagoya hens are excellent layers of light-brown eggs (around 200 230 eggs per year), but they are classified as non-sitters. The eggs and meat of these birds are said to be very delicious and of high values. At the moment, the Nagoya breed made its way back as a utility bird in Japan, but on a small scale. Many farms raise the bird, and it reaches the target weight for slaughter weight within 120 150 days.
