Millefiori di Lonigo Chicken

The Millefiori di Lonigo is an unusual and attractive breed of Chickens native to Lonigo, a town in the province of Vicenza in northern Italy. It has been shown for the first time in 1934, and since then it’s being used as a multi-purposes breed.

The Millefiori chicken usually has red or dark-orange plumage, which is beautifully spotted with black and/or white. It possesses a single comb, white earlobes, and bright-yellow legs. Millefiori di Lonigo hens are also good layers (around 150+ white eggs per year), but as other Mediterranean hens, they rarely go broody.

The current Millefiori chickens are heavier than their ancestors, and tend more to possess the characteristics of a dual-purpose breed, than an egg-laying breed. In the surrounding territories of the bird’s origins, it is still possible to find a number of this breed, which are purely Mediterranean and closer to the original race.

Sometimes Millefioris chickens lay rosy eggs, have red-veined earlobes, and hens have erected combs. The previous traits happen occasionally, due to crossbreeding Millefioris with other local breeds. Fortunately, Millefiori’s original genes still exist, and breeding programs are being held to keep this race genuine and pure.
