Lakenvelder Chicken

     The Lakenvelder is a rare and beautiful Chicken breed indeed, without a clear or exact point of origin. Mainly, the bird is thought to have come from the Nordrhein-Westfalen area of Germany and/or the neighboring areas of the Netherlands. The Lakenvelder has an eye-catching feather pattern which is a combination of black and white.

     Lakenvelders have medium-sized single combs, white earlobes and slate-blue legs. Despite having a tasty flavored meat, the bird is so small to fill the table and usually used for egg production. Lakenvelder hens lay plenty of white eggs (around 190 eggs per year, weighing up to 50 g per each), but they rarely go broody.

     Lakenvelder chickens are early-maturing birds, that are very active and can be quite flighty. The bird is a good forager and does well in free-range rearing, and a bantam version is available too.
