Kosovo Longcrower Chicken

The Kosovo Longcrower, or the Drenica, is a long-crowing Chicken breed originated in the area of the Drenica in Kosovo. Its color is exclusively black, with a few red or gold feathers that might appear on roosters’ wings. Over time, white spots can occur on Drenicas’ feathers, which is a sign of aging.

The Kosovo Longcrower rooster’s crow averages 20 – 40 seconds, and exceptional roosters will go on for 60 seconds. In the bird’s third year, the crow starts to become shorter. The Kosovo Longcrower is closely related to the Sanjak Longcrower, and it was considered to be the black color-variety of the later species.

The Kosovo Longcrower has a characteristic crest of black feathers, and there might be two symmetrical short horns on its nose. In most cases their v-shaped comb is concealed under their crests which usually lean forward. Kosovo Longcrowers have also red earlobes, yellowish-green legs, and are raised mainly by hobbyists that seek rare chicken breeds.

Kosovo hens lay many eggs in their first year (around 160 white eggs of 55 – 60 g weight per each). Becoming older, the amount reduces to become 50 – 70 eggs per year. Kosovo hens are classified as non-sitters, and don’t lay eggs until their eighth month. While, the roosters start to crow when they are six to seven months old.
