Janzé Chicken

The Janzé is a breed of Chickens, that was developed in the Janzé area, in northwestern France. It nearly became extinct during the World War II, and is still considered to be very rare till now.

The Janzé is a small chicken that stands on relatively short slate-blue legs. It has large single comb and wattles, and red earlobes. The Janzé is an elegant bird with a very fine, stiff and light bone structure. For a long time, this breed has been used as a utility chicken for producing eggs and high quality meat.

Janzé hens are good layers of white-shelled eggs (around 150 – 200 per year of weight 60 g per each), and they tend to go broody too. The bird comes only in the black color-variety, and it has been proven to be very effective against “Hornets”. In fact, Janzé chickens likes to feed on Hornets, which help farmers in providing protein for the bird and protecting their Honey Bees as well.
