Finnish Landrace Chicken
The Finnish Landrace is a breed of Chickens native to Finland. At one time, this breed was very common amongst poultry keepers, but the breeds’ popularity declined when more productive imported fowls arrived.
The Finnish Landrace is a medium-sized bird that’s available almost in any color, except the barred color-variety. They all have single combs, white earlobes, and slate-blue legs. Finnish Landrace chickens have good foraging abilities in addition to being active, and tamable birds too.
The Finnish Landrace was well spread across all of Finland, that’s why the breed has certain lines. The line is a group of birds in one location with similar characteristics. For example, the “Piikkiöläinen” is a Landrace from the area of Piikkiö and so on. Other main lines include; the Horniolainen, the Alhon, the Saviaipaleen, and the Ilmajokelaine.
There are almost 12 lines for the Finnish Landrace, and each line has its own weight standards. On average, the weight is expected to be around 3 kg (the size of a medium-sized fowl). Finnish hens are also good layers of cream-white eggs (+150), and they take brooding very seriously, and make excellent mothers.
