Faverolles Chicken

The Faverolles is a breed of Chickens that originated in the village of Faverolles in Northern France. They are classified as a heavy breed with a beard, muffs, and five toes per foot. Faverolles are always single-combed, with red earlobes, and whitish-yellow feathered legs.

Faverolles chickens are thought to be bred originally from Dorking and Houdan crosses. Probably, Cochin bloodlines were added at a point of time to make it a dual-purpose breed that produces high quality meat and plenty of eggs. Nowadays, The Faverolles is primarily an ornamental chicken breed raised for exhibition.

Faverolles hens are excellent layers of light brown eggs (around 200 eggs per year) and tend to go broody too. The color-varieties include; white, black, ermine, cuckoo, splash, blue, and salmon which is the most common color-variety. In salmon birds, the plumage of hens is mainly brown and creamy-white, with that of the males being darker, with black, brown, and straw-colored feathers.

Faverolles are quiet, friendly and gentle birds that can actually become very affectionate towards their keepers. They also have bantam versions that resemble their large counterparts.
