Coucou d’Izegem Chicken

The Coucou d’Izegem, or the Cuckoo Izegem, is a rare breed of Chickens from France. The exact origins and the time of appearance for this breed are unknown, but the bird was developed to its modern shape and size in the early years of the 20th century.

Coucou d’Izegem are very strong and vital dual-purpose chickens, that are also very quiet and familiar. As a breed, it combines meat production qualities with good lay performance. Coucou d’Izegem hens start laying at around seven months of age and even continue to lay all winter. They are expected to lay around 150 brown eggs per year of weight 65 g per each, and tend towards broodiness too.

The Coucou d’Izegem is a fairly large chicken with undeveloped and horizontal tail. It has a rose comb, small wattles, red earlobes, and whitish-yellow legs. The Coucou d’Izegem only comes in the cuckoo color-variety, and cocks are usually lighter than hens, as the cock’s light bars are wider.
