Chantecler Chicken

The Chantecler is a breed of Chickens, which originated in the Quebec Province in Canada. It’s quite gentle and amenable to taming, but it can be temperamental in confinement.

The white Chantecler was developed first by crossing white Leghorns, white Wyandottes, dark CornishesRhode Island Reds, and white Plymouth Rocks. The partridge Chantecler followed and it was developed by crossing partridge Wyandottes, partridge Cochins, dark Cornishes, and rose-combed brown Leghorns.

The Chantecler is an extremely cold-resistant chicken, which is a good layer and a good meat producer too. This breed has a cushion comb, small wattles, red earlobes, and bright-yellow legs.

The Chantecler hen is an excellent layer of light-brown eggs (around 200 eggs per year of weight 60 g minimum per each). She is a good winter layer and frequently goes broody in her second and third year. A bantam version is also available for this magnificent breed.
