Catalana Chicken
The Catalana, or as commonly known the ‘Buff Catalana’, is a breed of Chickens, which was developed in Catalonia, in Spain. It’s a hardy chicken of a Mediterranean-type, that remarkably handles extreme heat, and is a good forager too.
Catalanas are a medium-heavy chicken breed, and are almost the only dual-purpose Mediterranean-type bred for producing both meat and eggs. It’s thought that the bird’s ancestry includes Cochin’s bloodlines, and this accounts for the meaty carcass it produces.
The Catalana comes in a single color-variety (the buff), in which it has a beautiful golden plumage, and a blackish-green tail. The bird also has a large single comb, white earlobes, and slate-blue legs. Catalana hens lay white or lightly tinted eggs (around 200 eggs per year), but they don’t tend to go broody as other Mediterranean-type hens. A Bantam version is also available for this breed.
