Black Star Chicken

The Black Star or the Black Sex-Link is a hybrid breed of Sex-Linkable Chickens. It is being produced by crossing a Rhode Island Red or a New Hampshire rooster with a barred Plymouth Rock hen.

Black Star chicks can be differentiated at 1-day old, meaning that male and female chicks hatch in different colors. Both are black when they hatch, but males have a white spot on top of their heads. Black Sex-Link pullets feather out black with some red feathers in their necks. While, cockerels feather out with the barred rock pattern along with a few red feathers. The Black Star chicken is always single-combed with medium-sized wattles, and red earlobes.

Black Sex-Links are often referred to as Rock Reds. The hens are egg laying machines of brown eggs, and they have a good feed conversion ratio. A Black Star hen is expected to lay around (230 – 280) eggs per year, and she lays even more when good rearing conditions are met.
