Bergische Kräher Chicken

     The Bergische Kräher is a breed of rare long-crowing Chickens from the Bergisches Land, in North Rhine-Westphalia state in western Germany. It got named after its unusually long crow, up to five times that of other chicken breeds. The Bergische Kräher also resembles the Bergische Schlotterkamm which comes from the same place.

     The Bergische Kräher is being selected for its long crowing ability over color and type. However, Plumage color should be black with variable gold lacing. The Bergische Kräher chicken should have a large single comb, white earlobes and slate-blue legs.

     Krähers are dual-purpose chickens, that provide meat of good qualities. The hens are fair layers of white eggs (120 – 150 eggs per year of weight 60 g per each). Besides, having a little tendency to broodiness.

     Cock crowing contests with Bergische Krähers have been a sport in the Bergische Land for centuries, and many breeders raise the bird for this reason only. A bantam version is also known to exist, despite being very rare nowadays.
