Belgian Game Chicken

The Belgian Game, or commonly known as the Burges Game, is a breed of Chickens from Belgium that has been used in cockfighting for centuries. It’s one of the largest chicken breeds in Europe, and noticed to be one of the best game fowls as well. Other game breeds have been developed from the Belgian Game in its country of origin, but they are extremely rare and not as famous as this bird.

The Belgian Game is a docile chicken breed with a remarkably large and powerful appearance. The bird has a heavily pigmented face with purplish red till almost black color. Belgian Games have also pea combs, small wattles and slate-blue legs. In comparison with other game fowls, they are more practical, as good egg layers and producers of large quantities of very fine and tasteful meat.

Belgian hens lay around 150 creamy eggs per year (of 65 g weight or more per each), but they rarely go broody. The bird comes in several color-varieties, but the most original ones are the blue and the blue yellow birchen. Other recognized color-varieties for  Belgian Games do exist, which include; black, white, black-breasted red, silver-duckwing and golden-duckwing. A bantam version is also available for this breed.
