Barbezieux Chicken

The Barbezieux is a particularly large Chicken breed from southwestern France. It’s the tallest native chicken breed in Europe, and it’s characterized by a large and powerfully built body, and a very proud stance.

The Barbezieux is reputed to be one of the best-tasting meat chickens in the world. It is also said to be the superior chicken for roasting, as it has a wild gamey flavor, plus the golden color and the wheat aroma it gains when it’s roasted.

The Barbezieux is available only in a single color-variety, in which it has entirely black plumage with a beautiful green sheen. It also possesses an over-sized single comb, sizable wattles, white earlobes, and slate-blue legs. Barbezieux hens are good layers of large white eggs as well (160 – 200 eggs per year, which weighs about 75 grams per each), but they rarely go broody.

The Barbezieux is considered the biggest and the strongest of all French chicken breeds. It’s highly prized in its country of origin too, as no other race brings simultaneously the same degree of the volume and the meat quality.
