Ayam Pelung

The Ayam Pelung is a long crower Chicken breed from Indonesia. The name means ‘bent chicken’ in the local dialect, and it was derived from the property of the roosters to bend forward, when crowing with the upper body.

According to the local myth, the first Ayam Pelung chickens got produced from the offspring of some Ayam Kampong chicks, which were found in the backyard of a chicken hobbyist. These chicks grew exceptionally fast, and roosters among them uttered a long and melodious crow, that could last up to 11 seconds. Till the moment, crowing contests for the most perfect Pelung crow are being held, and participants bring their Pelung roosters from all over Java and the neighboring areas.

Ayam Pelung chickens are large and tall birds indeed, with full-grown roosters weighing around 5 – 6 Kg, and standing up to 50 cm. Also, their rapid growth rate earned them a place as good Broiler chickens in the area. Ayam Pelung hens don’t lay much eggs (around 80 cream/brown eggs per year), but their eggs are considerably large in comparison with other chicken breeds’ eggs. As the Ayam Kampong, it comes in a wide array of different color-varieties.
