Ayam Ketawa

The Ayam Ketawa (literally means the ‘Laughing Chicken’) is a breed of Chickens that originated from South Sulawesi, in Indonesia. It is one of the long-crowing chicken breeds, and prized for the clarity and unusual length of their crows.

The crow of Ayam Ketawa cocks has an unusual similarity to a human laugh, and hence comes the name. In the past, these birds were only kept as a status symbol of the Buginese royal family. Nowadays, Ketawas became more popular and are frequently seen in contests for the most perfect crow, for the Governor of Sulawesi Cup.

The Ayam Ketawa has no scientific description yet, as the uncontrolled mating between this breed and the other breeds in their environments still happen. It’s also not easy to find pure Ketawa chickens to evaluate them, and put a fixed standard for the breed.

In general, the Ketawa chicken’s body dimensions are similar to those of the Ayam Kampong, and almost they are different in the crow only. The Ayam Ketawa breed comes in many different colors and shapes, but they all lay white eggs.
