Australorp Chicken
The Australorp is a popular Chicken breed of Australian origins. It was developed from the Black Orpington as a utility bird with a focus on egg laying abilities. The Australorp is also the honorary National Chicken Breed of Australia.
The Australorp is an active and fast-growing chicken, with hens reaching point of laying at around five months of age. They are amazingly productive, but arn’t prone to broodiness. Australorp hens lay plenty of tinted brown eggs (200 – 250 per year of weight 60 g per each). They also hold the world record for egg production, as a hen of the breed laid 364 eggs in 365 days.
Australorp chickens are smaller and neater than Orpingtons, but they still produce plenty of meat for the table. They have moderate-sized single combs, red earlobes and slate-blue legs. The Australorp also comes in multiple color-varieties which are; black (the most common one) white and blue. A bantam version is also available for this breed.
