Australian Pit Game Chicken

The Australian Pit Game is a Chicken breed, that was initially developed in Australia for cockfighting purposes, by British soldiers stationed in New South Wales. The bird is thought to have been developed from multiple crosses of different European and Asian game breeds brought to Australia such as; the Old English Game, the Modern Game, the Malay, the Asil‎, and probably Sumatra’s bloodlines were added at a point of time.

The Australian Pit Game is one of the most loosely standardized chicken breeds in Australia. They could be big or small in size, of any color, hen-feathered or not, muffled or tasseled. In fact, Australian Pit Games were bred originally with a great amount of focus on pit characteristics rather than anything else. Based on that, the most important traits have become the health and vigor, and the strong aggressive-looking.

Australian Pit Game chickens have a heart-shaped body, with a flat back, prominent chest, and muscled strong legs. They also have red faces, small or tiny wattles, and mostly single or pea combs. Australian Pit Games are classified into three weight categories instead of the usual two, stating “over 2.7 kg” for heavy roosters, and “over 2 kg” for heavy hens. Under 2.7 kg and 2.0 kg, respectively, for light roosters and hens, and under 1.36 kg and 1.135 kg for bantam roosters and hens, respectively.
