Alsacienne Chicken

The Alsacienne, or the Alsace, is a breed of Chickens from Alsace, in eastern France. It is an ancient chicken breed, perhaps as long-established as the famous Bresse Gauloise, which it closely resembles. The Alsacienne was developed in the 1890s, at a time when Alsace was part of the German Empire.

The Alsacienne is a good-sized bird, with relatively small rose comb and wattles, white earlobes, and it has slate-blue legs. This chicken breed is available in the black, the gold salmon, the laced-blue, the black-breasted red, and the white color-varieties.

Alsace hens are good layers of large white eggs, which weighs at least 60 g per each. The breed is also very famous for its tasty meat, and usually used as a dual-purpose chicken breed. A bantam version is available for this breed as well, but it’s endangered and rarely seen nowadays.
