Barnevelder Chicken
The Barnevelder is a medium-heavy breed of Chickens, that got named after the Dutch town of Barneveld. The breeds that made up the Barnevelder were local Dutch fowls crossed with Asian breeds such as; Langshans, Brahmas and Cochins.
Barnevelders are bred primarily as utility birds, but they are showy birds too. They are hardy, good foragers, and yield a reasonable carcass when slaughtered. Barnevelders are characterized by having single combs, red earlobes, and bright-yellow legs.
Barnevelder hens are good layers of large eggs (200+ dark brown eggs per year), and may go broody too. Several color-varieties are recognized for this bird that include; black, double laced and silver-laced. A bantam version is also available for the Barnevelder.
