Bronze Turkey

The Bronze Turkey is a heavy wide-spread breed of domestic Turkeys. It had been the most popular turkey throughout most of the American history. Bronze Turkeys originated from crosses between domestic turkeys brought from Europe, with Wild Turkeys found in America. The bird is larger and more robust than the European turkeys, and tamer than Wild Turkeys.

The Bronze Turkey is a magnificent and beautiful bird indeed, with its coppery-bronze metallic sheen, which was part of the inheritance from its wild ancestors. Unfortunately, numbers of this turkey breed drastically declined, due to the adoption of the Broad Breasted Whitebut conservation efforts are being done to recover and protect this breed.

The Bronze Turkey is divided into two distinct types; The ‘Broad Breasted Bronzeand’ the ‘Standard Bronze’. Both types are exactly the same, but vary only in terms of weight. As the Broad Breasted Bronze was derived and selected originally from larger sizes of the Standard Bronze. Due to their large sizes, Broad Breasted Bronze Turkeys can’t mate naturally and artificial insemination is required to maintain this breed.
